GRAND PRIX OF MALAYSIA

FIA Formula 1 World Championship
SEPANG

A Ferrari on pole looked certain given their form in practice but the threat of rain in qualifying led to an unusually hurried session.  At the end of Q3, with Massa having just secured pole, the two Ferraris, McLarens and others were crawling back to the pits while Heidfeld and Alonso were still on their final quick laps.  By remaining on the racing line, the stewards demoted both McLaren drivers five grid places for 'blocking'. However, from the start both McLarens made good get aways and some smart overtaking (particularly by Hamilton) saw them recover to p5 and p7 by the end of the first lap. On their harder tyres the Ferraris eased away from the pack, while the softer tyred McLaren struggled for consistency.  As the front runners pitted for the first time, Massa lost his lead to Raikkonen which he then wasn't to lose, the Brazilian's race soon curtailed by an unaccountable spin. Meanwhile, a troubled pit stop for Hamilton saw Kovalainen jump him for the final step of the podium, while Kubica had a largely unaccompanied but impressive race to finish second.
