A qualifying session which looked destined for a Ferrari one-two ended more topsy-turvy than expected with Kubica securing his first ever pole fractions ahead of Massa, thanks mostly to a stunning middle sector. But the scene was set for a fascinating race with the two race-quick Ferraris behind a qualifying BMW and McLaren respectively. Mixed fortunes off the line with Hamilton swamped but Massa sweeping around Kubica. By lap 3 Raikkonen was past Kubica and the Ferraris ran untroubled to the end, Massa defying the expectation of shorter fuel loads by running longer than his team mate. The two BMWs comfortably outpace Kovalainen (although he did set fastest lap) to take p3 and p4 while Hamilton never recovered from a run-in with Alonso and trailed in thirteenth. Trulli, Webber and Rosberg completed the top eight, impressive for Toyota but a shade disappointing for Williams after strong practice pace. Meanwhile, Fisichella had a strong race for Force India.
