Widely predicted as a Ferrari circuit so it proved to be.  Easily quickest in qualifying Raikkonen took Ferrari's 200th pole ahead of team mate Massa. McLaren's miserable weekend saw Hamilton qualify in p3 - becoming p13 when his Montreal madness penalty was applied - while Kovalainen suffered a five place drop for allegedly blocking Webber in Q1.  Alonso and Trulli impressed while BMW failed to shine with a sobering reminder of work still to be done.  From the start, the red cars led away but down the field Hamilton effectively ended his race by cutting the Nurburgring chicane in his effort to retain a pass on an STR, reaping yet another penalty.  With a 30s lead over third place the Ferraris looked comfortable with the Finn leading the Brazilian by 4s after the first stops.  However, a broken exhaust sapped Raikkonen's engine and Massa slipped by to take the lead and eventually the win.  For a while it looked like the superb Trulli would have the laps and the speed to catch the ailing Ferrari, but with Kovalainen catching him and Raikkonen driving round his problem he couldn't but nevertheless finished a very creditable third.
