Towcester, Northamptonshire. 06/07/08 2007 winner, Kimi Raikkonen 60 laps GRAND PRIX OF BRITAIN
FIA Formula 1 World Championship A drying qualifying culminated in a McLaren on pole but perhaps not the one expected by the home crowd, Kovalainen pipping an even more unexpected Webber to pole position. From the start on a wet track, Hamilton was past Raikkonen and Webber to slot in behind his team mate. Webber promptly spun at the start of the Hangar Straight leaving the two McLarens to contest the lead, soon resolved when the home favourite slipped rather easily by the pole man. However, as the track dried Raikkonen began a rapid hauling in of the leader. At the point it looked like the lead might change, rain intervened and the McLaren was able to maintain the gap. Ferrari's race strategy fell apart when the opted to keep Raikkonen on old tyres at his first stop, gambling on the track continuing to dry. Once again though, the rain fell in buckets and the McLaren streaked away into an unassailable lead. In Hamilton's wake, Barrichello gave a heart-lifting drive on full wets tyres as everyone else tip-toed about on intermediates, denied second place only because of a fuel rig fault. |
